A Line on the Ground at Greenwich
Last Saturday, Maya visited the Royal Observatory in Greenwich with her brother. The Observatory is home to the historic Prime Meridian. This historic line marked zero degrees longitude. People used it to measure places east and west.
At first, Maya did not see the line. While her brother was looking at a telescope, she was reading a small sign in the courtyard. Then a guide said, "Look down." A metal line marked the historic Prime Meridian in the courtyard.
Maya put one foot on each side of the line. She laughed and asked, "Is one foot in the east and one in the west?" The guide said that the historic Prime Meridian separates the eastern and western hemispheres. Maya took a photo, but her brother was not ready, so they took another one.
