A Seed Vault in a Mountain
Mia sees a bright door in a snowy mountain. The door belongs to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, and the Vault is on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. Mia reads about it because she likes plants.
The Seed Vault opened in 2008. It is in the Arctic, but it stores seeds from genebanks around the world. Mia is surprised because one place can keep copies from many countries.
Some genebanks keep seed samples and send copies to Svalbard. The Vault is a backup, and it offers long-term storage for copies of seed samples from genebanks around the world. Mia makes a small drawing because she wants to remember the idea of a backup.
Norway owns the Seed Vault, and the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food, NordGen, and the Crop Trust manage it together.
