By the Time the Police Arrived, the Thief Had Escaped
I am Ruth. I work at a corner bookshop that has served our neighborhood for thirty years. Last winter we experienced a break-in that neighbors still mention when they stop for tea and local news.
The incident happened on a Tuesday night. Our security camera later showed that someone had forced the back door before midnight. The person had entered the storage room and had taken cash from the small safe we had installed after a storm had damaged the roof two years earlier.
A resident who had walked his dog had noticed a light inside the shop. He had called the emergency line because he knew we had closed at seven. Operators had recorded his report and had dispatched officers from the station nearby.
By the time the police had arrived, the thief had escaped through the alley.
