Two Friends Catch Up After a Long Summer Apart

The café on Mill Street was half empty when Ana arrived with wet hair from drizzle. I waved from a corner table. We had not seen each other since June, and the hug lasted longer than polite custom suggests.

Ana ordered tea. I chose coffee. She said, "You have changed your haircut." I replied, "I cut it in July before camp. Have you been well since we last met?"

She has worked at the hospital all summer, mostly night shifts. Last month she transferred to a day ward, and sleep improved. In June she felt exhausted every morning. Since August she has cooked dinner at home again instead of buying sandwiches.

I told her about my road trip in July. I drove to the coast with two cousins. We camped near cliffs and we watched stars without city glare.
