Cooking Dinner with My Flatmate

Rosa and I share a flat near the university. On Wednesdays we cook together because both of us finish classes early. The kitchen is small, but we have learned how ingredients behave when we combine them.

If we chop vegetables before heating the pan, dinner finishes faster. If we forget to defrost chicken, it cooks unevenly and stays cold in the middle. If we read the recipe fully first, we avoid missing steps that ruin the sauce.

If the rice absorbs too much water, it turns sticky and clumps on the plate. If we fluff it with a fork and leave the lid off, the grains separate nicely. If we add salt to pasta water, the noodles taste better even before we add sauce.

Rosa prefers spicy food. If she adds chilli early, the flavour spreads through the whole dish.
