A Rainy Weekend Hike That Did Not Go to Plan
Our hiking group, which meets once a month in the Lake District, planned a circular route that a local guide had recommended online. We set off early on Saturday, hoping to finish before dark, but weather maps that we checked at breakfast showed heavy rain moving in from the west.
By midmorning clouds rolled over the ridge we wanted to cross. Wind pulled at our jackets, and paths that looked gentle on paper turned slippery underfoot. Tom, who usually leads confidently, suggested we slow down and rethink the summit attempt.
We stopped at a bothy where trekkers who had arrived earlier were warming soup. They asked whether we had brought spare layers, and Emma admitted she had left hers in the car. Someone lent her a dry fleece, which saved the mood when morale started to drop.
