Diary Entry: The Trip That Surprised Me
Monday, 14 October
I planned a weekend that I thought would be quiet, yet a train that I boarded on Friday led to adventures that I did not expect. The ticket that I bought online mentioned a town that guidebooks often skip.
The hostel that I found online occupied a building that once served as a school. Guests who slept in dormitories that smelled of fresh linen shared a kitchen where travellers exchanged recipes that they learned abroad. A map that hung in the hall marked trails that wound through hills visible from the rear window.
On Saturday morning I joined a group that offered walking tours to visitors who arrived without plans. Our guide, who spoke English with an accent that sounded musical, pointed to ruins that dated from a century that locals still celebrate with festivals.
