Planning a Community Garden on Empty Land
For three years residents who live near the vacant lot on Mill Lane have discussed projects that might transform ground that currently collects litter and weeds. Last month a committee that formed at a town hall meeting published a plan that could turn the space into a garden where neighbours grow food together.
The site that planners surveyed sits beside a wall that once belonged to a factory which closed when industries that relied on coal declined. Soil tests that experts conducted revealed contamination that must be removed before anyone who intends to eat vegetables should plant seeds. Grants that environmental agencies offer could cover costs that exceed what local donors who attend fundraisers might raise alone.
Design proposals that architects volunteered include raised beds that wheelchair users who join the project could reach without strain.
