Do Not Throw It Away: A Morning at a Repair Café
On Saturday, I carried a broken desk lamp to a Repair Café in my town. A Repair Café is not a shop that sells coffee. It is a meeting place where people repair things together instead of throwing them away.
The idea began in the Netherlands. Martine Postma developed it, and the first Repair Café took place in Amsterdam on 18 October 2009. Since then, local groups in many places have used the same idea.
At the event, tables held tools and materials for different jobs. Volunteers who knew about clothes, bicycles, furniture and electrical appliances were ready to help. Their advice and help were free, although visitors could leave a donation.
I brought my lamp in and placed it on the electrical table. The volunteer, Sam, asked whether I had unplugged it before leaving home.
