Journalist: Thank you for speaking with us, Ms Ortega. Your design for the community library was chosen last year after many proposals were submitted by firms across the country. How did you feel when the news was announced by the selection panel?
Architect: I was relieved because our team had worked late for months. Initial sketches had been rejected by the client twice, and revisions had been requested by advisers who wanted more natural light in the reading rooms. When the final concept was accepted, champagne was opened by my colleagues in the studio, though I was exhausted.
Journalist: The site had been used as a warehouse before the council bought it. What challenges were created by that history?
Architect: Contamination had been reported by environmental surveys conducted in 2018. Soil had to be treated by specialists before foundations could be poured by the construction company.
