The Officer Asked What I Had Seen That Night
I am Leila. On Tuesday evening I witnessed a minor traffic incident near the harbour bridge, and a police officer asked me to stay while she recorded my account. Later I wrote the conversation in my notebook because the sequence of reported questions helped me understand how witnesses retell events.
Officer Brennan had asked whether I had seen the collision clearly. I told my roommate that the officer had asked if the weather had affected my view. I had answered that the rain had been light and that streetlights had illuminated the junction.
She had asked where I had been standing when the cars braked. I explained that I had waited at the bus stop on the north side. Officer Brennan had asked how far I had been from the vehicles, and I had estimated fifteen metres.
