European Cities, Which I Explored on a Long Journey
Last summer I travelled for six weeks, visiting cities, which I had previously known only from books and films. The journey, which began in Lisbon and ended in Vienna, changed how I read maps and remember names.
Lisbon, which climbs seven hills above the Tagus, greeted me with heat and tiled facades. Tram 28, which rattles through narrow streets, carried tourists and locals alike. Alfama, whose alleys echo with fado at night, felt like a village folded inside a capital.
My host, who rented rooms near the cathedral, recommended a bakery open before dawn. The pasteis, which arrived warm in paper sleeves, justified every early alarm. She, whose grandmother taught her the recipe, spoke English with a musical accent.
Porto, which lies further north, surprised me with its riverside warehouses. The bridges, which Gustave Eiffel's firm designed, span the Douro with elegant steel.
