Organising the Community Festival, Which Brought the Square to Life
Every September our town square transforms for three days into a stage for music, food, and crafts that reflect the neighbourhood's diversity. This year I joined the organising committee after volunteering at a single stall the previous autumn and realising how much invisible labour successful events require.
Planning began in January with meetings held in the community centre, which rents rooms cheaply to local groups. The chair, Sandra, distributes agendas by email and insists that decisions receive written confirmation before the next session. We formed subcommittees for logistics, programming, and finance because experience shows that undivided responsibility produces gaps nobody notices until the week before opening.
