How Two Roommates Negotiated a New Lease
When our landlord raised the rent, my roommate Ana and I sat at the kitchen table with tea, laptops, and a draft lease that forced us to practice advanced discourse linkers in everyday life. The increase was modest; however, it arrived the same week Ana's freelance contract ended.
Ana opened by saying she wanted to stay. Moreover, she liked the neighborhood's quiet evenings and the bakery below our window. On the other hand, she needed a lower share until she signed new clients. Consequently, we had to rethink how we split costs fairly.
I agreed the flat suited us both. Furthermore, moving would mean broker fees and days lost to packing. Nevertheless, I could not cover the entire increase alone because my own salary had plateaued. Thus, we started listing options without rejecting the conversation.
