The public inquiry into coastal erosion opened on a cold Tuesday, and from the first hour it was clear that speakers would compete for emphasis. What the committee needs is evidence, not rhetoric, and what the chair repeated twice was that pseudo-clefts would not substitute for data.
It was the hydrologist who arrived with tide charts spanning thirty years. It was those charts that contradicted the developer's optimistic brochure. What surprised the room was not disagreement itself but the clarity with which residents named what they had lost.
What residents remember is the footpath that vanished after the winter storm. What they fear is another season of promises without repair. All the village wanted from the session was a timeline written in plain language, and all the village received initially was jargon wrapped in reassurance.
