When the professional ethics tribunal convened to examine research misconduct allegations, counsel on both sides knew that emphasis would shape perception as much as facts. It was integrity that the tribunal sought, not performance, and it was performance that the respondent's opening statement unfortunately resembled.
It was the chairwoman who set the tone by fronting procedural guarantees. These guarantees we extend equally to complainant and respondent, she said. What participants needed was fairness; what fairness required was patience with complex testimony.
What the complainant alleged was data selection bias presented as neutral analysis. What the respondent denied was intent, while admitting procedural shortcuts under grant pressure. All the panel wanted was clarity about authorship timelines, and all timelines would be reconstructed from server logs.
It was server logs that contradicted the respondent's first account.
