A Letter Between Friends on Choices and Regret
Dear Ana,
I would have written sooner had the term allowed space to breathe, but allow it the term did not until yesterday.
What I wanted to say is that I needn't have changed careers, yet change them I did and scarcely have I regretted the shift.
It was your letter that prompted this reply, and prompt it it did with a cleft highlighting friendship over achievement.
So did my sister ask about the fellowship, and my parents did as well on Sunday.
Ought I to have stayed in the lab? Perhaps, but stay I did not because clinic work felt urgent.
Not until page three dare I admit how your fronted sentences influenced my own academic prose.
What we ought to remember is that grammar carries emotion, not only logic.
