I. The Old Sow

This is a story from a long, long time ago. It is a very strange time. Pigs talk in rhyme. Monkeys chew tobacco. Hens take snuff to make them strong. And ducks say, “Quack, quack, quack!”

At this time there is an old sow. A sow is a mother pig. She lives in a little house near a wood. The old sow has three sons. They are three little pigs. They are small, fat and pink.

The three little pigs eat a lot. They eat in the morning. They eat at midday. They eat in the evening. And they are always hungry.

But the old sow is poor. She has no money. There is not much food in the house. There is a little bread and a little milk. That is all.

One morning, the old sow looks in the pot.
