I. Seven Fairies for a Baby

A long time ago, there is a king, and there is a queen. They have a big palace and a lot of gold. But they are not happy. They have no children.

The king and the queen try everything. They go to holy wells. They go to old churches in faraway places. They pray every day. But nothing helps.

Then, one day, the queen has good news. She is going to have a baby! And soon a little girl is born. She is a princess.

The king is so happy. He wants a very fine christening for her. A christening is a special day in the church for a new baby.

“Our little girl needs godmothers,” says the queen. “And the best godmothers are fairies.”

In those days, fairies are godmothers to special children.
