I. How Robin Became an Outlaw

Long ago, when King Henry the Second ruled England, there was a great forest near the town of Nottingham. It was called Sherwood Forest, and in it lived a famous outlaw called Robin Hood. An outlaw was a man outside the law. The law did not protect him, and anyone could catch him or kill him. No archer in England could shoot as well as Robin. More than a hundred merry men lived with him in the forest. The poor people loved them, because nobody in need ever went to Robin and came away with empty hands.

This is how Robin Hood became an outlaw.

When Robin was eighteen, the Sheriff of Nottingham announced a shooting match. The Sheriff was the King’s officer in that part of the country, and he was a hard, greedy man.
