I. Tom and Aunt Polly
“Tom!”
No answer.
“Tom! Where are you, you bad boy?”
Aunt Polly looked round the room over the top of her glasses. She was a kind old lady, and her glasses were her pride. She wore them because they looked fine, but she could see much better without them. She searched under the bed and found only the cat.
Behind her there was a small sound. She turned just in time to catch a boy by his jacket. He was coming out of the little room where she kept the jam.
“There you are! Look at your hands and your mouth. That’s jam! I’ve told you forty times to leave that jam alone. Give me that stick.”
She lifted the stick high in the air.
“Aunt Polly! Look behind you!”
The old lady turned round quickly.
