Florence Nightingale at Scutari Hospital
In 1854, Florence Nightingale arrived at a military hospital in Scutari. At that time, soldiers from Britain were fighting in the Crimean War. The hospital was a terrible place. When she walked inside, sick men were lying on the dirty floor. The doctors were working hard, but they were not saving many lives because they did not have enough medicine.
Florence and her nurses started to clean the hospital. Every night, while the doctors were sleeping, Florence was walking through the dark rooms. She was carrying a small lamp. She was checking the patients, and she was talking to them quietly. When she was standing near their beds, the men were not feeling afraid.
After some time, the soldiers were resting in clean beds. They were eating warm meals, and they were getting better. The hospital was becoming a safe place.
