The Day the Mountain Woke Up

Pompeii was a busy Roman town near a beautiful mountain. On a summer morning in the year 79, people were starting their normal day. A baker was making bread when the ground suddenly moved. A woman was walking to the market when a big, dark cloud hid the sun.

Many people were working in their gardens when they heard a very loud noise. They looked up and saw fire. The mountain was actually a dangerous volcano. Children were playing in the streets when grey ash and small stones started to fall from the sky.

Everything happened fast. While families were running away from the town, the sky turned completely black. The heavy ash covered the houses and the streets. The famous Roman town disappeared under the ground.

Hundreds of years later, workers were digging in the earth when they found an old stone wall.
