A Teacher Explains Finished Time and Open Time

In an interactive language seminar on Tuesday morning, our English instructor, Mr. Henderson, drew a long horizontal chalk line across the blackboard. He explained that understanding the difference between finished time and open time is the secret to mastering English past tenses. Many language learners struggle with this distinction, but Mr. Henderson used clear real-life examples that clarified how native speakers choose between the past simple and the present perfect.

Mr. Henderson pointed to the finished section on the left, writing words like yesterday, last year, two days ago, and in 2019. He explained that when a time period has completely ended, English speakers must use the past simple. For instance, he said, "I visited Rome two years ago," or "She drank coffee yesterday morning." In both cases, the specific moment is closed, and the action belongs entirely to history.
