I. The Jam and the Flies

It is a summer morning. A little tailor sits on his work table by the window. A tailor is a man who makes clothes. Tailors often sit on their tables when they sew.

The little tailor is very happy today. He sews and sews with all his strength.

A woman comes down the street. She is a poor country woman, and she has a heavy basket.

“Good jam, cheap!” she calls. “Good jam, cheap!”

The tailor likes these words very much. He puts his head out of the window.

“Come up here, good woman!” he calls. “I want some of your jam!”

The woman is glad. She carries her heavy basket up the three steps to the tailor’s room.

“Show me all your jam,” says the tailor.

So the woman takes out all her pots, one by one.
