I. The Palace Under the Sea

Far out at sea, the water was as blue as the bluest flower and as clear as glass. But it was very deep there. No rope could reach the bottom. Down there, at the very bottom, lived the Sea King and his people.

The bottom of the sea was not only sand. Strange trees and plants grew there. They moved with every little wave, as if they were alive. Fish swam in and out of their branches, just like birds in the trees on land.

In the deepest place of all stood the Sea King’s palace. Its walls were made of coral. Its windows were made of amber, a clear yellow stone. The roof was made of shells, and in each shell lay a shining pearl.

The Sea King’s wife was dead, so his old mother looked after his home.
