I. Down the Rabbit-Hole
Alice was sitting on the river bank beside her older sister. It was a hot summer day, and she had nothing to do. Once or twice she looked at her sister’s book, but there were no pictures in it, and nobody in it ever talked. “Who wants a book like that?” Alice thought.
Then a White Rabbit with pink eyes hurried past her. “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!” he said. At first Alice did not find this very strange. But then the Rabbit pulled a watch out of his waistcoat pocket, checked the time and ran on. Alice jumped up at once. A rabbit in a waistcoat, with a watch! She raced across the field after him and saw him disappear down a big hole under the hedge. Alice followed him without stopping to think how she would ever get back.
