I. The Yellow Horse

On the first Monday of April 1625, the little town of Meung, on the road from Gascony to Paris, was full of noise. People ran out of their houses and crowded around the door of the Jolly Miller inn. They had come to look at a young man and his horse.

The young man was eighteen years old. He had a long brown face, high cheeks and bright, clever eyes. He wore an old blue coat that had faded to a strange colour, and a cap with a feather. A long sword hung at his side and knocked against his legs as he walked. His name was d’Artagnan, and he came from Gascony, in the south-west of France.

But it was the horse that made people laugh. It was a small, old pony from Béarn, about thirteen years old, with yellow hair and almost no tail.
