The Long Road Home
Experiencing major international travel disruptions tests voyager endurance, creating unexpected journeys and unforgettable storytelling material for years to come. Last winter, while traveling back from a conference in Zurich to our home in Manchester, my colleague Arthur and I found ourselves stranded by a massive blizzard across central Europe. Our journey home was scheduled to take five hours, but it evolved into an epic thirty-six-hour overland odyssey across three countries.
Our travel complications began early on Sunday morning when airport authorities announced that heavy snow had grounded all flights across Switzerland. The airline had cancelled our afternoon flight before we even cleared airport security. Realizing that air travel was completely paralyzed, Arthur and I hurried to the central railway station. We boarded an overnight passenger train to Paris, but fallen trees on the alpine tracks delayed our locomotive by four hours.
