A Weekend That Connected Past and Present

Returning to places steeped in childhood memories often creates a poignant dialogue between who we were and who we have become. Last weekend, I traveled back to the coastal village of St. Ives in Cornwall, where my family spent summer holidays twenty years ago. Walking along the familiar granite seawalls brought back vivid recollections of childhood sandcastles, while also allowing me to appreciate how much my life has evolved since those carefree days.

On Saturday morning, I visited the harbour where fishermen were unloading fresh crab pots. Many physical features of the village have remained remarkably unchanged over the decades. The whitewashed cottages still climb steeply up the hillside, and the salty Atlantic breeze still carries the cries of wheeling seagulls. I stopped at the corner bakery where my grandmother used to buy warm saffron buns.
