How Long Have You Known Each Other?

Gathering around a celebratory dinner table with lifelong companions often prompts affectionate questions from newer acquaintances who marvel at such effortless interpersonal chemistry. Last Friday evening, twelve of us gathered at a cosy Spanish tapas restaurant to celebrate my partner's thirtieth birthday. As dishes of garlic prawns and patatas bravas arrived, our newer university friends noticed the relaxed shorthand and shared jokes between our older childhood group.

During dessert, a curious colleague named Sophie turned to Marcus and me and asked: "How long have you known each other?" Marcus smiled and replied that we have been close friends for over twenty years. He explained that we have known each other since primary school, having sat at adjoining wooden desks in Miss Gable's classroom back in 2004. Sophie gasped in genuine astonishment, admitting that she had never maintained a friendship for two full decades.
