When Our Friends Showed Up Late to Dinner

Hosting a dinner party for close companions is a heartwarming social tradition, but unexpected delays can easily disrupt carefully planned culinary schedules. Last Friday, my partner and I invited our university friends, Marcus and Clara, for a homemade Italian pasta dinner. We had timed the roast vegetables and garlic sourdough bread so that everything would be piping hot by seven o'clock.

Seven o'clock passed without a ring at the doorbell, and the kitchen clock steadily moved forward. At half past seven, Marcus finally phoned to explain that their suburban train had broken down near the canal bridge. He apologized profusely and asked us to carry on without them, but we insisted on waiting, keeping the pasta sauce simmering gently on the lowest flame.

When our guests finally showed up at eight o'clock, they looked exhausted from walking through the cold autumn rain.
