Making thoughtful decisions about how to spend your precious weekend time often involves negotiating between domestic obligations and spontaneous leisure desires. Last Friday evening, after an exhausting forty-hour working week at my architectural design firm, my original plan was to remain quietly at home, catch up on laundry, cook a simple dinner, and rest. However, an unexpected telephone call from my cousin Oliver presented an intriguing social dilemma.
Oliver had secured two complimentary tickets to an outdoor jazz and street food festival taking place in the countryside near the Peak District. Although attending meant waking up at seven o'clock on Saturday morning and driving eighty miles in unpredictable autumn weather, the opportunity was too tempting to decline. Consequently, I packed a warm waterproof jacket, set my alarm, and agreed to join him.
The journey began with thick morning fog and heavy motorway congestion, which tested our collective patience.
