Returning to University for a Reunion, Which Felt Like Time Travel
Stepping through the arched stone gateway of St Andrews University, which stands proudly above the stormy North Sea in Scotland, I experienced a disorienting sensation of temporal collapse. Fifteen years had passed since our graduation ceremony, yet the medieval cobblestone quadrangles and grey stone towers appeared completely untouched by time. Returning for our class reunion felt less like an ordinary weekend trip and more like stepping backwards into our youthful student memories and forgotten conversations.
I met my old flatmates in the college courtyard, where yellow birch leaves were dancing across the paving stones in the afternoon breeze. Sarah, who now manages international environmental programmes in Edinburgh, embraced me with genuine warmth. Her voice, which retained the playful humour of our undergraduate days, effortlessly bridged the long years and geographical distance that had separated our careers and daily lives since our final examinations.
