How Two Roommates Negotiated a New Lease

Living harmoniously in a shared urban apartment requires ongoing emotional maturity, practical compromise, and regular open interpersonal dialogue. Last autumn, my flatmate David and I faced a significant domestic dilemma when our private landlord in Edinburgh issued a twelve percent rent increase alongside a new two-year lease. Because our respective financial situations differed considerably, we needed to reach an equitable agreement before signing the binding tenancy document.

David was completing his doctoral dissertation on renewable wind energy and had to manage a strictly capped university stipend throughout the year; thus, paying an extra hundred pounds each month seemed practically unfeasible for his budget. Similarly, my own freelance graphic design contracts had fluctuated unpredictably throughout the difficult winter quarter. Even so, neither of us wished to endure the immense stress, brokerage fees, and moving expenses of finding separate flats across town.
