The Reason for the Hills: Beatrix Potter's Country Transition
In 1905, celebrated author and illustrator Beatrix Potter used the royalties from The Tale of Peter Rabbit to purchase Hill Top Farm in the English Lake District. To fashionable London society, her decision to leave city salons for a remote stone farmhouse seemed completely baffling. Yet Potter had long felt alienated by metropolitan domestic confinement. The reason why she bought Hill Top Farm was her deep longing for artistic independence and physical connection to the land. Among the rugged Cumbrian fells, she discovered a second calling that would define her mature life.
The reason why she excelled at farming was her relentless dedication to practical detail. Rather than acting as an absentee landlord, Potter immersed herself in the demanding routines of traditional sheep farming. The reason why local farmers respected her was that she personally managed breeding records and walked the high pasturelands in winter rain.
