A Critic's Thoughts on a Provocative Exhibition

An art critic ought not to judge a gallery exhibition before seeing the entire collection. I walked into the new contemporary space in Soho yesterday afternoon, and I immediately felt I ought to have stayed home. The curator had suspended fifteen grand pianos from the ceiling by thin wires. One dare not walk directly underneath them, for the wires looked dangerously fragile.

A serious gallery ought to provide some context for such an imposing display. Visitors stood against the walls, whispering that they dare not breathe too heavily. You need not be a structural engineer to realise that gravity is unforgiving, yet the artist claimed we ought to embrace the tension. I dare say the only tension I felt was fear.

The accompanying manifesto stated that audiences ought to challenge their comfort zones.
