The Silence Before the Adagio
Maestro Valerie Vance tapped her wooden baton against the brass music stand, cutting off eighty musicians mid-crescendo. The vast acoustic space of the symphony hall absorbed the lingering resonance of the cellos, leaving only the faint hum of air ducts in the rafters. Down in the first row of strings, the concertmaster, Julian, lowered his violin, his expression guarded.
"Julian, the violins sound immaculate, yet they possess no pulse," Valerie said, resting both hands on the edge of the score. "You ought to play that descending phrase as though it cost you something. A musician needn't fear sentiment in this movement; it is written to ache."
"With respect, Maestro," Julian replied, adjusting his chinrest, "if we stretch the tempo that far, the lower strings will lose the underlying metre. We dare not let the rhythm dissolve into soup."
