A Ghost on the Radar Screen

Elena Vance watched the sweep of the primary radar trace a pale green arc across the dark console, waiting for flight four-twelve to confirm its descent through the freezing rain. The cargo freighter was twenty miles out when a second blip flickered onto the glass, unannounced and without an altitude readout. It hovered directly along the arrival corridor, precisely where no civilian craft should have been.

"Look at sector four," Elena said, not turning away from the glowing sweep. "Tell me you see that."

Marcus, the avionics engineer perched on the bench beside her, adjusted his glasses and leaned closer. "I see a phantom return," he said quietly. "If you want me to run the secondary receiver diagnostics, I will do so immediately."

Elena nodded, her hand already resting over the frequency key.
