Conversations in the Sculpture Studio
Sharing an artistic workspace requires an extraordinary amount of patience. Last year, I rented a sprawling industrial studio with a fellow sculptor named Julian. I prefer working in complete silence, whereas Julian rarely does. He listens to classical radio broadcasts, convinced that the music enhances his creativity. I am fairly certain it does not, but I tolerate the noise because the natural light in the building is magnificent.
Yesterday, we received an unexpected commission from the city council. They wanted two bronze statues for the renovated public square, and they wanted them urgently. Julian immediately began sketching elaborate neoclassical designs. I told him he was overcomplicating the project, but he insisted he wasn't. "The city deserves something monumental," he argued, wiping clay from his apron. "If we don't deliver a masterpiece, no one else will."
