Evaluating Dendrite Nucleation Mechanisms in Solid-State Lithium Batteries
Solid-state lithium batteries incorporating inorganic solid electrolytes represent one of the most promising avenues for next-generation energy storage, yet characterising interfacial failure mechanisms requires rigorous epistemic caution. By replacing volatile organic liquid electrolytes with non-flammable solid ceramic conductors, such as garnet-type lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide, researchers aim to pair energy-dense lithium metal anodes with high-voltage cathodes safely. Early mechanical models suggested that ceramic electrolytes with shear moduli exceeding twice that of metallic lithium would suppress dendritic penetration completely. However, materials scientists tend to emphasize that empirical observations frequently contradict these idealized continuum mechanics models. Under practical operational current densities, nanoscale lithium filaments continue to propagate through solid ceramic separators, leading to premature cell short-circuiting.
