I. Three Drops of Blood

It is winter. It is very cold. Snow falls from the sky like white feathers. The fields, the roads and the trees are all white.

In a land far away there is a castle. A king and a queen live in the castle. The queen is young, kind and very pretty.

One day, the queen sits at a window. The window is open. Its frame is made of ebony. Ebony is a very black wood. The queen is sewing. From time to time, she looks at the snow. It falls slowly and quietly.

Then the queen pricks her finger with the needle.

“Oh!” she says.

Three drops of blood fall from her finger. They fall onto the snow outside the window. They are three small red drops.

The queen looks at the drops. The red on the white is very pretty.
