I. The Garden Behind the Wall

A man and his wife live in a small house. They are good people, and they love each other very much. But they are not happy. They want a child. For many years they wait and wait. But no child comes.

Then one day the wife has good news.

“I think I am going to have a baby,” she says.

Her husband takes her hands. “At last!” he says. “God is good to us.”

At the back of their house there is a little window. From this window they can see a big garden. It is a lovely garden. It is full of pretty flowers and green plants. There are herbs too. Herbs are small plants for cooking.

But there is a high wall all round the garden. Nobody goes into it. Nobody dares.
