I. An Emperor Who Loves Clothes

This is a story from many, many years ago. There is an emperor, and he loves new clothes. He loves them more than anything in the world.

He spends all his money on clothes. He wants to look fine every day and every hour.

The Emperor has soldiers, but he does not care about them. There is a theatre in his city, but he does not go to it. Plays do not make him happy.

Only one thing makes him happy. He likes to ride through the streets in his coach. Then all the people can see his new clothes.

“Look! There is the Emperor!” the people say. “What a fine yellow coat!”

“Yesterday it was a red coat,” says a woman.

“And tomorrow it will be a new one,” says her husband. “He never wears the same coat twice.”
