I. A Town Full of Rats

This story happens long, long ago, in a town called Hamelin. The town is in the north of Germany, not far from the big city of Hanover. A river runs past the town. Its name is the Weser. The river is deep and wide. Its water washes the town wall on the south side.

Hamelin is a very pretty town. It has old houses and a market place. It has a big church and a town hall. You can look and look, but you can’t find a nicer place.

But in the year of our story, the people of Hamelin are sad. They have a big problem.

The problem is rats.

There are rats in the houses. There are rats in the streets and in the shops. They are big and bold. They are not afraid of anything.
