I. Story One: The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Here are some old tales from Norway. Norway is a country in the far north. It has high hills, deep woods and cold, fast rivers. And in the old tales, it has trolls too.

Our first tale is about three billy goats. A billy goat is a male goat. He has a little beard. He has two horns on his head.

These three billy goats all have the same name. The name of all three is Gruff.

One goat is little. He has a thin, small voice. One goat is bigger. His voice is not so small. And one goat is very big. He has long horns and a big, rough voice.

So we call them Little Billy Goat Gruff, Middle Billy Goat Gruff and Big Billy Goat Gruff.

The three goats want to go up to the hillside.
