I. The Old Quarrel

Long ago, in the Italian city of Verona, there were two great families, the Capulets and the Montagues. Both families were rich, and both were very proud. For many years there was a bitter quarrel between them. Nobody could remember how it began, but the hate never stopped. It passed from fathers to sons, and even the servants of the two houses hated each other.

This is the story of a young man and a young woman from these two houses. They loved each other, and in the end their love brought peace to Verona. But the price of that peace was very high.

One hot Sunday morning in July, two Capulet servants, Sampson and Gregory, were walking through the town square with swords at their sides. They were looking for trouble. When two Montague servants came across the square, Sampson looked at them and bit his thumb.
