I. Poor Miss Taylor
Emma Woodhouse was handsome, clever and rich, with a pleasant home and a happy nature, and she had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to trouble her.
She was the younger of the two daughters of a most kind and loving father. Her mother had died so long ago that Emma could hardly remember her, and her sister Isabella had married young and gone to live in London. So Emma had been the mistress of her father’s house since she was a girl. Her mother’s place had been taken by Miss Taylor, a gentle and sensible woman who had come to teach the two sisters and had stayed for sixteen years. In the end she was less a teacher than a friend, and she and Emma had lived together almost like sisters.
