Samir Wants the Moon
Hana had promised her cousin. Samir was staying the night, and he wanted the moon. Not a picture of it. The real one, from the roof, because the lamps on their street turned the sky above his window into a muddy haze.
They climbed the last stairs with a blanket over Hana's arm. The roof door stuck, then gave. Outside, the roof was brighter than she had hoped. A security light poured white across the tiles and hummed. Under that light the sky looked empty. Samir tipped his head back, blinked hard, and looked at her as if she had hidden the moon in a pocket.
"It is up here," she said. "The light is the problem, not the sky."
She wanted him to see it before he decided the promise was empty. She also wanted to be right.
