Lila's Blue Bowl

On Sundays, Lila's family eats soup together, and Lila wants the blue bowl at her place before they sit down. The other bowls are white. The blue one is hers. Her grandmother, Ruth, fills that one first.

Today the blue bowl is not on the shelf.

Lila opens the cupboard. She sees white bowls, plates, and cups. She moves them carefully and looks again. The blue bowl is not there. At the kitchen table, her brother Theo watches her. He has a glass of water, and he is very quiet.

"Did you see my bowl?" Lila asks.

Theo looks at the sink. "I was hungry this morning," he says. "The white bowls were too high."

Lila goes to the sink. The blue bowl is there, with a little cereal still stuck to the side. Her face feels hot.
